Where Music, Mentorship, and Healing Come Together

Every program at Mentoring with Music is built around one core belief:
when young people feel safe, accepted, and free to express themselves, they begin to heal — and when they heal, they begin to hope.

We serve a beautifully diverse mix of youth:

  • teens returning from juvenile detention,
  • youth with developmental disabilities or autism,
  • young people battling depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts,
  • students navigating poverty, instability, or trauma,
  • and kids who simply need a place to belong.

In our space, no one knows each other’s background — and that’s exactly why it works.
Music levels the ground.
Creativity opens the heart.
Acceptance gives them new life.

Below is an overview of the programs that make this transformation possible.

After‑School Music & Media Program

A safe, structured, judgment‑free space for youth ages 8–18

Our flagship program blends hands‑on music education with trauma‑informed mentorship. Students learn:

  • Audio engineering & music production
  • Songwriting & vocal performance
  • DJ fundamentals & live instruments
  • Photography, videography & digital storytelling
  • Music history & cultural exploration

But the real magic is what happens inside the learning:

  • Kids who never speak begin to open up
  • Teens who feel invisible start to shine
  • Youth who carry heavy emotions find relief through creativity
  • Students who fear the future begin to imagine one

Creative expression becomes emotional regulation. Skill‑building becomes confidence. Mentorship becomes stability.

Rhythms of the World

Global music, cultural pride, and identity exploration

This program teaches youth that music is universal — every culture has its own rhythms, instruments, and stories. Students learn:

  • Cultural storytelling
  • Global rhythms and musical traditions
  • How music expresses identity and community
  • Traditional instruments from around the world

It builds curiosity, excitement, and pride — especially for kids who have never seen their own culture celebrated.

Sonic Science

STEM + Sound = Curiosity + Confidence

A hands‑on exploration of vibration, tone, and energy. Students discover:

  • How sound moves
  • Why objects create different tones
  • How frequency, pitch, and resonance work
  • How science and creativity connect

This program strengthens problem‑solving, observation, and scientific thinking — especially for kids who struggle in traditional classrooms.

JDC CONNECT

Fresh starts for youth returning from juvenile detention

Many youth reoffend because they leave detention with nothing — no food, no clothes, no transportation, no support, and nowhere safe to go.

JDC CONNECT changes that.

We meet each youth’s most urgent needs the moment they walk out the door:

  • Food, clothing, hygiene items
  • Transportation
  • School re‑enrollment or GED support
  • Job assistance
  • Help securing a safe place to live
  • A caring adult who shows up and stays

This program is life‑saving. It gives youth what they’ve never had: someone who won’t give up on them.

Special Needs Inclusion

A place where every ability is welcomed and celebrated

We proudly serve youth with:

  • Autism
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Emotional and behavioral challenges
  • Sensory needs
  • Social anxiety

Our environment is structured—yet flexible, filled with music and laughter, deeply supportive. Students learn at their own pace, in their own way, with mentors who understand their needs and know how to engage them.

Creative Wellness & Emotional Support

Creativity as mental health — expression as healing

Through journaling, songwriting, performance, and collaborative creation, youth learn:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Self‑expression
  • Stress reduction
  • Identity formation
  • Confidence and self‑worth

Many of our kids arrive unable to imagine a future. Through creativity and connection, they begin to believe one is possible.

Field Trips & Cultural Experiences

Opening the world for kids who rarely get to see it

Students explore iconic music landmarks such as:

  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
  • Motown Museum
  • Sweetwater Music
  • American Classical Music Hall of Fame

These trips expand their worldview, build cultural pride, and show them what’s possible beyond their neighborhood.

AMP Fest 2026 & Youth Showcases

Creativity, confidence, leadership, entrepreneurship, and community pride

Students perform, create, and lead at:

  • Seasonal youth showcases
  • Community events
  • Festivals
  • AMP Fest 2026 — the region’s biggest youth‑powered celebration

Teens aren’t just participating — they’re running it. They learn leadership, teamwork, public speaking, and entrepreneurship.
